Did You Know?

One in four women report having been physically abused by a husband or intimate partner at some point in their life.  Domestic abuse is a crime that, by definition, is a pattern of behavior used to gain power and control over an intimate partner. It undermines the victim/survivor’s sense of self, free will and safety because it forces victim/survivors to make choices based on how their partner may harm them physically, spiritually, and/or emotionally.

Battering is a chosen behavior based on a sense of entitlement.  It is not a mental illness, behavior disorder, or anger management problem. It is normally committed away from the sight of others to avoid detection.  It does not stem from an inability to be nonviolent but from an unwillingness to be so.

One in three women and one in seven men will be sexually assaulted at some time in their life.  Partners, friends and family members of survivors are also affected by sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse involves a wide variety of experiences.  The common thread is that violators take power and control away from the victim.  Whether the abuse is harassment, an obscene phone call or rape, the perpetrator is the only person who controls what happens.
